A Sik Mind ? With Dr George Sik - January 2015
Tuesday, 6th January 2015
Some of us struggle to get going in January, while others bounce into the new working year with exuberance and enthusiasm. Just why are some people more resilient than others? It always strikes me how useful personality profiling can be in exploring this area of the human condition.

One of the bigger news stories in recent weeks has been the BBC’s axing of Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson following a fight with his producer, an especially vivid example of conflict in the workplace. Although things don’t always go as far as they did here, these kinds of conflict are not uncommon and looking at the personalities of the participants often helps to understand why they took place.

Our 360 Degree system has become one of the best-loved features of our Psychometric Portal in a short space of time with many of our clients, whose use for it covers many aspects of development and appraisal, as well as coaching specifically. We were by no means the first suppliers of such a system but having had a lot of other systems to look at was very helpful, as we were able to see what we thought worked and didn’t work in a good 360 degree system.

Welcome to a new short column, revealing intriguing morsels from the wider world of psychology. Fascinated as we are by personality, it’s always interesting to read about what is counter-intuitive and the ‘dark side of emotional intelligence’ (nothing to do with Star Wars!) is one such topic. Essentially, being emotionally intelligent doesn’t necessarily make you a nice person – despite what books popularising the subject might have led you to believe.

Spring is in the air and with some of the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been getting – not to mention many people’s determination to do a bit of spring cleaning – the theme of change is perhaps a rather topical one. A question I get asked a lot is around the extent to which personality can change. How fixed is the way we prefer to behave?

With coaching ever more essential in the workplace, it is always fascinating to see psychometrics employed in this field. Although traditionally associated with selection, personality profiling is increasingly used in learning and development and indeed the area of coaching specifically, with our instrument, The Quest Profiler, being no exception. The section about Conflict Styles and Conflict Resolution, for example, helps remind us that different people deal with conflicts and adversarial situations in different ways, and the better we understand these, the more we can see why conflicts might have occurred in the past and try to stop them from happening in the future.

As we focus on emotional health and wellbeing, it was interesting to read that a survey conducted by People Management suggests that mental health in the workplace is, despite a greater willingness to talk about issues, getting worse

It looks like there was plenty of lively discussion at the BEER Winners’ Dinner, much of it about the interaction between individuals and an organisation’s culture and values. Engaging people as they become part of a company’s vision and strategy, bringing two different cultures together in the case of a merger or acquisition and making sure that everyone on every level is involved in being part of the bigger picture were all addressed and, coming from the psychometric point of view, it is always good to hear how useful the diagnostic aspects of our Culture and Engagement questionnaire have been in helping to make these things happen.

It was great to be up at the CIPD annual conference and exhibition over Bonfire Night and to see so many old friends and new on the eras stand. As usual, the presentations at the conference covered a host of themes and I couldn’t help noticing how many of them were related to personality in some way.

Clerical and Admin Tests
The Clerical and Admin Series tests assess the aptitude of candidates for clerical, administrative or support roles. They can be used across a wide range of functions including Customer Advisors, Call Centre staff, Secretarial and Data Entry roles.

Coaching
With professional coaching we help you to stand back from the practicalities of day to day issues and focus on those crucial strategic matters which will help you take the organisation or business forward in the future – vision, interpersonal skills and the qualities required of a leader. For leaders, it is an opportunity to step back, review progress, consider external analysis and respond to the challenges faced.

Coaching
Sometimes there are people with specific development needs who will benefit from a more individualised approach. Our coaching programmes are flexible and are suitable for both leaders and managers. Coaching can be designed to address a wide range of needs, from those identified as part of a 360 feedback process to supporting someone stepping into a new, more senior role, for example.

Coaching and Mentoring Programmes
The power of coaching and mentoring as a learning and development tool has been increasingly recognised in the workplace. More and more managers are being asked to provide a coaching leadership style or to act as mentors but without the specific knowledge and skills to support this aspect of their role and it is becoming increasingly apparent that HR and L&D professionals want to have a credible coaching and mentoring ability and skill set to support the needs of the staff in their organisations.

Coaching for Results in Business
Thursday, 26th May 2016
Whilst coaching has been a key part of sporting success for many years, it has only recently been highlighted as an essential business tool. In today's fast moving and complex global world, coaching is increasingly the most effective way of achieving sustained learning and development of both individuals and teams. Top performance results from properly focused attention and investment. More and more companies are turning to coaching to complement the overall development of the individual. After all, it's individuals that create excellence. This approach allows space for conventional technical skill based training as well as a focus on individual issues that enhance performance, and the payoffs are significant.

Engagement is not just for surveys
Friday, 20th May 2016
We believe passionately in the power of engagement, just like everyone reading this no doubt does. If we really want to change the perception that engagement is just for surveys, we need to be brave and ask more difficult questions, establish deep commitment to the cause across the board, and help people think differently about the role they play. Satisfying as landing a great engagement survey is, there is a far more engaging opportunity for all of us. Imagine what might happen to the engagement of the people in your organisation when you deliver that.

How The Best Employers Survey Can Help Organisations To Attract And Retain Talent
Thursday, 9th June 2016
It widely recognised that the most effective business leaders are those who pay attention not only to what a company does in terms of its operations, but also to how it does it. Additionally, the impact of an organisation's culture, values, and engagement often extends beyond those who work directly for it - for example, it can also impact on customers, suppliers and prospective recruits. It is not until you have identified your organisation's strengths and development needs that you can create an effective solution that will form a solid foundation for the future. Culture & Engagement provides you with the foundation stone for change in your organisation, and is a real catalyst for improving business performance.

Managerial and Professional Tests
The Managerial and Professional Series tests are not necessarily applied only to those with graduate qualifications but in choosing this level of test there would have to be evidence of significant attainment in secondary or higher education. They are suitable for graduate level recruitment right through to the assessment of experienced and more senior managers, those typically having to deal with more complex policies and procedures. They can also be used for management development purposes at all these levels.

Managing Things or Leading People?
Thursday, 7th July 2016
Leadership today comes with many diversions, most of which tend to drift away from leadership itself. To the point where today’s leaders find themselves doing so many things as leaders, except leading itself. Tasks have to be completed and effective processes put in place. These details are at the core of good management; yet often, the important role of leading people in the organisation is sacrificed for managing it and in time, leaders begin managing things more than leading people. This trend of moving away from people and other leadership priorities is a costly mistake.

Modular Development Programmes
We can combine a number of short courses into a modular development programme to meet your specific needs. We usually encourage a diagnostic phase using tools such as The Quest Profiler®, Culture & Engagement and 360° assessment, through our Psychometric Portal® to help with development planning and identification of how best to utilise the learning resources available. Our preference is to work in partnership with your organisation – identifying (and possibly developing) in-house resources where possible.

Operative Tests
The Operative Series tests assess the ability to reason with basic information and the visual representation characteristic of the work of a range of shop floor staff. No assumptions are made about the educational standards, although those with tangible attainments in secondary education are potentially likely to do better. These tests are appropriate for assessing unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled operatives in a range of industries including manufacturing, production, warehousing and logistics and could potentially be used to select for the grade of first line supervisor—but not for higher positions where other tests are likely to be more suitable.

Specialist Tests
The Specialist Series tests assess the ability to reason with symbols, involving neither written text nor numbers. This ability is appropriate for specialist IT positions which involve extensive manipulation of information coded in symbols, particularly where coding is integral to the role. Specialist engineering (across all disciplines) and architectural roles rely extensively on this ability, where symbolic or coded representation is commonplace such as electric and chemical engineering.

We can provide just that, making use of our cutting-edge flexible questionnaires written with this purpose in mind but wide open to additions and modifications by you.

Supervisory and Team Leader Tests
The Supervisory and Team Leader Series tests assess the aptitude of candidates for Supervisory and Team Leader positions and are suitable for both selection and development purposes. They best suit the grade of supervisor, team leader or any position involving the use or application of budgets, policies or moderately complex procedures within an operational setting.

Talent Development
With a diagnostic phase using state-of-the-art psychometric tools, we begin with development planning and identification of how best to utilise the learning resources available. We work in partnership with your organisation, identifying (and possibly developing) in-house resources where possible. Once the diagnostic stage has been completed, our clients are in a great position to understand fully the strengths and development needs of the participants. This is a crucial first step in any change and succession planning process.

Team Development
Even the best and most effectively-functioning of teams could be better. No team is perfect, even if it is already doing well. We can help teams get even better. The great thing is that making this happen is often a lot of fun – entertaining as well as educational. Let us show you how.

Team Facilitation Workshop
This workshop will use output from a personality questionnaire as well as discussions and exercises facilitated by a consultant so team members can get to know more about the way they prefer to work and crucially, also how their colleagues do.

Team Report
The Team Quest report will allow you to combine multiple participants who have completed The Quest Profiler questionnaire into one report.

Thanks!

The Awards
As part of the initiative, we aim to promote the best employers of the Eastern Region – the awards give us the perfect opportunity to do just this. Once the survey has been completed by the participating company, they are automatically entered into the awards process.

The Festival
We received very positive feedback from the seminar and discussion groups that we ran in the first year of our Best Employers Eastern Region initiative. As a result, we have developed an employee engagement focused conference – The Best Employers, Eastern Region Festival. The festival is an opportunity for attendees to learn about and develop their organisation’s culture and values to enable employee engagement. This is achieved through keynote speakers, ‘freeflow’ discussion hubs and networking to share best practice. This bi-annual conference is a chance for organisations and individuals to come together and share best practice.

The new standard in online psychometric assessment

The Psychometric Portal
The Psychometric Portal is a cloud-based platform providing you with access to personality assessments, 360º feedback tools, a full range of ability tests, culture and engagement surveys, role profiling, and candidate matching tools.

The Quest Profiler
The Quest Profiler is one of the fastest-growing personality questionnaires in the UK, used for selection and development by some of Britain’s largest companies. With some of the most sophisticated personality feedback available, it’s not hard to see why so many organisations have made the switch to this personality questionnaire.

The Quest Profiler
When matching an individual participant, reports from The Quest Profiler can be matched to an Ideal Role Profile of your choosing. Competencies and behaviours which have been identified as crucial are highlighted in the report, and are each compared to the ideal range of values defined in your Ideal Role Profile.

The Seminars
These interactive, informative seminars are a valuable source of advice and support for participants, a great opportunity to share best practice and to resolve employee engagement issues as a collective.

The Survey
The surveys are biannual, with each company receiving a tailored report, summarising the culture, values and leadership style across the organisation. They also receive an action plan for guidance on further development, all of which are key to an organisation’s ability to attract and retain key staff.
